FRANCA TERRA: ONE YEAR IN FRANCE
J. MIGUEL FERREIRA

Wilek Markiewicz once remarked that the artist depicting nature has the best opportunity to create something original. J. Miguel Ferreira resonates with this sentiment because, no matter how extensively he photographs the natural landscape, it always manifests as new and distinct; everything is in flux, and nothing remains constant. In 2000, the author acquired a large-format camera and embarked on a journey through France. What ensued was an exploration full of emotions, a rediscovery of France that offered a fresh perspective on the landscape — his interpretation of the French scenery aimed to reveal the delicate equilibrium between nature and humanity.

The « Franca Terra » series was meticulously printed in the darkroom on double-weight fibre paper and subsequently selenium-toned for archival permanence.

This hardcover edition measures 30x30cm (11.8x11.8in) and comprises 120 pages featuring 98 gelatin silver print reproductions.

NEW DIRECTIONS
STON RAPP

During the early 2000s, Ston Rapp sensed a profound transformation unfolding in his hometown, Geneva. The familiar landscapes were undergoing a metamorphosis beneath his feet. Geneva was on the brink of irreversible change: once vibrant wastelands were giving way to sanitised promenades, alternative lifestyles were being ousted from their squats, and the pervasive homogenisation of public spaces had commenced. Recognising the urgency, Ston Rapp felt compelled to document this condemned present.

CHROMATIC FANTASIES
GEORGES BAULT

In February 2004, an unexpected journey led Georges Bault to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, immersing him in its labyrinthine streets guided by personal connections to existence. Navigating the densely populated capital, he confronted unpreparedness amid pervasive suffering, intertwined with shadows of depression and guilt. A retreat to a "white man's house," a haven in the storm, provided relative comfort with its vast expanse and unique garden, a vibrant anomaly against the backdrop of despair. The garden's stark beauty paradoxically echoed the nearby horrors, the iron gate offering meager refuge against the harsh realities beyond. Seeking solace, he immersed himself in the fragrant embrace of flowers, their delicate aromas weaving a tapestry against despair. Amidst the odors and din, Johann Sebastian Bach's timeless compositions became his refuge during those desolate two months.

TELLURIANS,
STON RAPP

In contemporary photography, Ston Rapp blends candid tradition with Ralph Gibson's influence. His work transforms bustling scenes into visual narratives, portraying human activities with thoughtful precision. Rapp's minimalist compositions distill chaos into harmonious interplays, capturing the poetry in ordinary moments. Inspired by Gibson, he blurs boundaries, inviting viewers to explore meaning. Titled by specific activities, each photo weaves into a larger narrative, making the ordinary extraordinary. Rapp's lens quietly observes human life's nuances, documenting a poetic dance of existence. In his synthesis, Rapp creates a visual celebration of the universal beauty found in life's mundane moments.
